Consequences From Deforestation

A consequence of deforestation would be the increased frequencies of wildfires, which burn and damage the forest. This leads to habitat destruction and decreased food supply for many animals as they struggling to adapt to the changing environment. An opportunity for invasive plants and weeds to take over the habitats is also there.

Furthermore, with drier conditions from deforestation, there will be less annual precipitation, lengthening the dry seasons in the Amazon. Consequently, around 30-60% of the forest will become a dry savanna, as trees won’t have enough moisture to sustain themselves. This forces many species to find new habitats and there would also be increased competition between different animals for food and shelter due to resource shortages.

Stats: -about 73% of habitats housing Amazonian bird species will be destroyed by 2050

-Between August 2016 and December 2019, 2% (about 1500 entities) of the jaguar population were either killed or displaced from their habitat due to forest damage.
